Louis Berry Interview and Liverpool O2 Academy Review

in Interviews by

I saw my first controlled demolition last night! (12th May 2016)

I watched as Louis Berry blew out the walls, supporting beams and all fittings and fixtures, before bringing the house down on top of hundreds of ecstatic fans.

This has to be one of my favourite performances of all time. From the moment he swaggered onto stage, to rapturous applause in his home town, to the final chord of his last song, he had the crowd in the palm of his hand. Flying through favourites such as .45 and 25 REASONS, as well as crowd favourites like COCAINE BABY and LAURIE, Louis and the band had smiles a mile wide at the crowds reaction. They were a coherent, tight band who were made for live performances.

I caught up with him before his sellout gig. He is quite a humble guy, a total contrast to his stage persona. Very proud of his Liverpool roots he told me how he got into music. He was in Belfast, watching some traditional Irish music, and got the urge to learn and write his own music. He tried copying the sound, but instead found his own style, luckily for us.

So what do you listen to?

I LISTEN TO ALL KINDS, I LISTEN TO ANYTHING FROM BLUES, RAP TO POP, I LIKE POP TUNES, ILL LISTEN TO ANYTHING. THERES NO MAJOR INFLUENCE OR ANY KEY FIGURES WHO HAVE INFLUENCED MY SOUND, YOU KNOW, I DONT WANNA SOUND LIKE ANYONE ELSE. MUSIC HAS BEEN AROUND FOR SO LONG , THERE IS GONNA BE A COMPARISON TO SOMEONE SOMEWHERE. SOMEONE IS ALWAYS GONNA THINK “IT REMINDS ME OF THIS OR THAT”, I DONT KNOW ANYONE IN THE CHARTS NOW OR IN THE LAST TWENTY YEARS THAT I SOUND LIKE.

I asked about his new album…

“ I WENT OVER TO NASHVILLE TO WORK WITH A PRODUCER CALLED JACQUIRE KING, AN AMAZING PRODUCER, IN ONE OF THE BEST STUDIOS IN THE WORLD, THERE WERE ROOMS UPON ROOMS OF GUITARS TO CHOOSE FROM, REALLY OLD STUFF FROM LIKE 1918! THEY ARE THE TYPES OF GUITARS I WAS USING ON THIS ALBUM, I LOVE STUFF WITH CHARACTER “.

Whats the album going to be called?

“ I DUNNO YET, I DUNNO YET, IM NOT SURE HOW MANY TRACKS EITHER, I HAVENT DECIDED, THERES GONNA BE A BIT OF A FIGHT IN THE CAR PARK BETWEEN ME, THE RECORD LABEL, THE MANAGEMENT ( LAUGHING HARD ) WEVE ALL GOT OPPOSING IDEAS AS THERE IS AN ABUNDANCE OF SONGS THERE TO CHOOSE FROM, WHICH IS ALWAYS A GOOD POSITION TO BE IN “

We chatted some more about how he started. He explained the frustration of going to open mic nights in Liverpool, many of the bars he wanted to perform in had their “regulars”, so he couldn’t get his foot in the door. It appeared the music scene was sewn up for newcomers because of the cliques in some clubs. How ironic now, that the very bars who turned him away, are now beating a path to his door and begging him to perform!

Go and see Louis Berry, you won’t be disappointed, Ill even refund your money if you’re not happy……I think my money is safe!
