Five in Five With: City Calm Down

in Interviews

I OH YOU Records are thrilled to announce IN THIS MODERN LAND, the new single from Melbourne four-piece CITY CALM DOWN, and the latest track to be revealed from the band’s highly anticipated second album.

Two years on from their debut, IN A RESTLESS HOUSE, Jack Bourke [vocals] Jeremy Sonnenberg [bass] Sam Mullaly [synths / keyboards] and Lee Armstrong [drums / percussion] return with the band’s latest offering; soaring synths and horns; an exuberant and bold crescendo; and all cemented by Bourke’s striking, unmistakable baritone. As heavy and haunted as your conscience.

During IN THIS MODERN LAND, front man Bourke adopts the perspective of a person coming to terms with, and perhaps embracing, their own social isolation. Contrasted with the soaring instrumentation and melodies, the lyrics highlight the growing disconnect between Bourke and his surroundings.

Today we caught up with Lead singer from the band, Jack Bourke for our Five in Five

1: What has been your biggest f*ck up onstage? Where was it; what song was it; how was it received?

I tripped and sprained my ankle stepping off a monitor speaker during a show with an old band. I crashed pretty hard in front of a whole lot of friends. I tried to dust it off as if it didn’t happen but the damage [physically and reputationally] was done. I think the guitarist in that band was so embarrassed he quit the band that night!

2: You’re changing the band’s name to your favourite fruit + the reason you last took painkillers; your new band name is …?

Apple Toothache

3: How can we collectively put an end to online ticket touting? Feel free to show your workings for extra points …

Given how prevalent it is, it’s going to require a fairly sophisticated technological solution [which is well beyond my paygrade]. At the end of the day, whatever the solution is, it is going to have to make the business of ticket touting [we call it scalping in Australia] too technologically complicated for the average ticket tout without making it too technologically difficult to buy the ticket in the first place. Tricky!

4: What would your music Super Power be; and which other bands would you use it on and why?

I’ve always just wanted to be a better guitarist [I’m hopeless]! So, I’d have to start with that. I’m not sure how it would help me against other bands though. They seem to have the guitar playing thing sorted.

5: Your idol is going to give you the instrument that they’re famous for:

Who is it? David Bowie
What instrument? Singing
Why? I’m a singer and I want to be a better singer!

Since the band’s early MOVEMENTS EP and their acclaimed 2015 debut, CITY CALM DOWN have paved the way for their forthcoming second album – which will see a worldwide release in early 2018 – with a run of singles achieving over four million streams, multiple spots on Hype Machine, spins on Beats 1, high rotation radio, and a coveted Feature Album on the Australian broadcaster Triple J. The band’s strengths – intricate, irresistible synth and guitar hooks, soaring yet melancholic choruses – have earned accolades from the likes of NME, Stereogum, Consequence of Sound, Indie Shuffle and more.

Recorded in Melbourne with long-time producer Malcolm Beasley, expect an album that explores the emotional idiosyncrasies of our modern, changing world, rendered in glistening keyboards, chugging guitars and triumphant horns. As vocalist Jack Bourke says of the forthcoming album:

“With this album, we wanted to introduce new musical ideas whilst retaining the many production qualities and tensions present on IN A RESTLESS HOUSE. It was difficult getting the balance right between stepping too far to the left and repeating ourselves. We certainly learned a lot as a group.”

With multiple sold-out tours and appearances at major festivals, CITY CALM DOWN have also performed with ALT-J, CHVRCHES, BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB and more, and in February 2018 they will undertake another national Australian trek as part of the Laneway Festival alongside the likes of DREAM WIFE, FATHER JOHN MISTY, SLOWDIVE, THE WAR ON DRUGS and WOLF ALICE.

Before then, in celebration of the new single, CITY CALM DOWN visit the UK and France this month, as follows:
