Tom Hingley, front man with Inspiral Carpets during their highly successful live and recording career during the 1990s, is playing a show at Leeds Belgrave Music Hall on Friday 3rd Aug with support coming from two of the most celebrated and promising bands the North has to offer: Wakefield’s Adore // Repel and Manchester’s False Advertising.
Ahead of the show, we caught up with Tom for our popular 5 in Five…
Q1: What has been your biggest f*ck up onstage?
A: Inspiral Carpets played a big show in Dublin at a long-since demolished boxing stadium called the National Stadium. During a long instrumental section of a song called Further Away, I went and stood at the back of the stage in front of a big curtain when, unexpectedly, two men grabbed me from behind the curtain as a prank. I jumped out of my skin and stormed off; it probably looked pathetic on my part but it’s not great having a trick played on you in front of two thousand people. I did come back onstage eventually but it ruined the show for me.
Q2: You’re changing the band’s name to your favourite fruit + the reason you last took painkillers; your new band name is?
A: going to watch
Q3: What’s your favourite 90’s album?
A: Nirvana – Nevermind.
Q4: What would your music Super Power be and which other bands would you use it on and why?
A: To ensure good breath [as opposed to halitosis] and the band I would use it on would be Free.
Q5: Jam, Record or Tour: Who would you jam with; who would you record with; and who would you go on tour with and why [past or present]?
A: Jimi Hendrix.
Why? Because he was a genius.
A: Wilko Johnson or Johnny Marr.
Why? Even a truly awesome guitarist needs a singer.
A: Happy Mondays.
Why? Because it would be a laugh a minute. With great music.
To give the band their full name, Tom Hingley and the Kar-Pets are in essence an Inspiral Carpets tribute band but one with a clear and obvious difference – Tom Hingley was vocalist with the band from 1989-2011, successfully overcoming all other vocalists who auditioned for the role at the time, including Noel Gallagher.
