Bluedot opens its gates for the 3rd year and this is what we know so far!

Being a first timer at Bluedot, you never know what to expect, and this weekend is right up there with ‘expect the unexpected’ and when the official address for the venue is ‘ Jordell Bank Observatory, Cheshire, Earth – you get a sense that it’s not just another festival taking up space in your calendar.

The festival as a whole has a much more laidback approach, not so much of the ‘big groups of teens, half dressed and falling over one another’ crowd.

That said, there really is something for everyone here! Festival director, Ben Robinson said: “Our mission is to not only erode the boundaries between science, culture, art and technology but to also highlight the beauty and fragility of our planet Earth, and what a better way to achieve this by opening proceedings with such a remarkable and enlightening spectacle. It’s going to be truly incredible and a real festival highlight. We can’t wait!”

At the time of writing this, Saturday 13:30, already close to 200 performances have taken to the stage. Thursday saw for the first time, Blue Planet in Concert take to the Lovell Stage, performed by the Halle Orchestra and conducted by renowned composer George Fenton. An outstanding mix of just stunning sounds as festival goes looked on with a keen eye. A perfect opening headline that truly set the tone of this wonderfully idilic location.

Covering close to 30,000 steps, Friday made for a long day. There is so much to do here it’s almost impossible to see everything so a bit of careful planning was needed. From lightsaber training, to in conversations Professors of Astrophysics, you’re pretty much covered! The Flaming Lips closed of the Lovell stage on the Friday and pretty much summed the festival up, with one inflatable…. Fuck Yeah Bluedot! More to follow soon. Gary Numan, Future islands and Booka Shade, tonight plus 100’s more throughout the day. Bring it on!
