Denise Johnson Stuns Northwich Fans With Flawless Performance of Manchester Classics.

in Live by

Last night, Denise Johnson left Northwich fans feeling stunned after a flawless performance, playing a mixture of Mancunian classics and original material which was heard for the first time.

Playing at the Charlatans North by Northwich takeover and kicking the set off with The Verve’s ‘The Rolling People’, and joined by wizarding guitarist, Thomas Twemlow, the pair played classics from The Smiths, 10cc and New Order.

As well as Johnsons spine tingling, goosebump evoking vocals, Twemlow, (Twem) pulled sounds from an acoustic guitar that can only be described as mind blowing. Anyone stood at the back of the room would have been forgiven if they though Twem was actually playing Les Paul.

Considered as a new voice in Manchester in the late 80s, Johnson quickly became recognisable across many dance tracks.

This came after a brief but impressive apprenticeship: asked to sing lead for a group supporting US funk band Maze, she played Wembley only weeks after starting out. She sings gloriously on Primal Scream’s ‘Don’t Fight It Feel It’ from their 1991 classic Screamadelica, and on several tracks from their 1994 follow-up, Give Up But Don’t Give Out.

Also a regular performer with Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner’s Electronic, she still tours today with Manchester post-punk legends A Certain Ratio.

It’s rumoured, that Johnson’s solo album is due to be released around September time this year (2018) With a string of live shows to follow.
