It’s time to rejoice, as new music from The Courteeners arrives in the form of the funky rhythmic song, ‘The 17th’.
The single is taken from the bands’ forthcoming fifth album, Mapping The Rendezvous, which is due out on October 21st.
It moves along somewhat slowly, but never feels sluggish or dreary, as the bass line keeps you hooked alongside the sweet synthesizer sounds.
Liam Fray’s vocals take on a deeper and heavier tone than he usually delivers, which fits in perfectly with the pulsating beat of the music. At times, it almost feels like a distant relation to their 2013 single, ‘Are You In Love With A Notion?’, except with added trills.
The closing lyrics of ‘We’re having such a good time’ perhaps indicate that The Courteeners are indeed enjoying the fact that they’re in a healthy position, on the verge of releasing their fifth album, which not many of their contemporaries have achieved.
The single isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel, but it does signal that the band are trying to generate a freshness in their sound. It holds its head up high, while setting the bar for the remainder of the album.
8/10 fingers from us!
