Rockin’ The Blues, Various Artists, Provogue

in New Releases by

For many, think of the blues, and its all, ‘I woke up this morning…. or my baby left me…..’, you can forget that with this album.

The thought to many can sound dreary, but we must remember, Blues is at the very heart of much of today’s music.

Rockin’ the Blues an album recently released on the Mascot/Provogue Label and showcases many of today’s touring Blues musicians and I will hasten to add, smashes those pre-conceived ideas

Whether it’s the upbeat offerings from Kenny Wayne Shephard Diamond and Gold and Quinn Sullivan’s Midnight Highway, a very talented 18 year old that’s been playing seriously for the last decade, or the addition of a reggae beat from Eric Gales Been So Long, It’s not until Water Trout’s contribution Were All In This Together that the traditional blues style comes out, but even then it showcases his style of blues in a powerful positive way.

Add in a few more to the mix, the strong soulful yet powerful voice of Beth Hart’s Love is a Lie, Simo’s psychedelic People Say, Gary Hoey’s guitar chops on Dust and Bones and The Supersonic Blues Machine L O V E, a song that just exudes a 70’s road trip across America.

Other artists that appear on the album include Johnny Langs Stronger Together, bring a touch of gospel into his blues. The beautiful slide guitar work of Sonny Langdreth in Blues Attack, that dare I say could be leading towards country. Then theres the heavier element of Champagne and Reefer from Black Stone Cherry and Ronnie Baker Brooks Times Have Changed that combines blues with soul in a great way.

I’m sure you are getting the idea that Todays Blues are not all doom and gloom but have moved on and with so many musicians ‘takes’ on the style, has become more diverse and crosses over into many other styles of music.  I loved the album.

The album is a taster of what’s to come from the label, Next year in March the Rockin’ The Blues tour takes in Germany, The Netherland and the UK.

Always loved music live, enjoy all genre's. Adding photography into the mix has been more recent and enjoying combing the two together. Self confessed vinyl junkie, so if not down the front, often found searching through record shops.
