Poets Of The Fall – Ultraviolet

in New Releases

Finish rockers Poets Of The Fall release their eighth studio album this week.

To promote the album, the band set off on a world tour next week starting here in the UK.

The band have been around since 2003, formed by vocalist Marko Saaresto and Guitarist Olli Tukiainen, adding in Markus Kaarlonen (keyboards), Jani Snellman (bass), Jaska Makinen (guitar) and Jari Salminen on drums, this line up has remained constant throughout.

I was told I’d enjoy the band, being a fan of another finnish rock band HiM, if  i’m totally honest, I really don’t hear a lot of HiM in this album, maybe previous recordings. That’s not a bad thing at all though, as I come to this album afresh. To me musically it transcends many styles or genres, it’s rock, it’s pop, it’s prog, even having a jazz infusion included.

POTF have released two singles off the album already as downloads; False Kings, and more recently the opening track to the album Dancing on Broken Glass.

Dancing On Broken Glass is a great opening track, catching you attention straight away, Markus’s keyboards feature prominently and the track tackles past and present relation isssues. It’d be wrong for me to describe the meanings behind each song and it appears this is something vocalist Marko was coy about them. He explained in a recent interview

the album is about the hidden world, the subconscious that affects us all, meanings can be very personal

For me, I felt there were some great soundscapes that threw up various images as you listen to the album, My Dark Disquiet for instance built up from its haunting keys to the image of a band playing a stadium gig. Again this track is very much driven by Markus’s keys and the soulful voice of Maarko, this came across as symphonic musically. False Kings by contrast has a very different feel, almost like a soundtrack to a film and after watching the accompanying video, I get the impression that’s what the band were looking for.

I enjoyed Fools Paradise, its another song that once heard is very difficult to get it out of your head. Its not until the track Moments Beforewe hear the guitars soaring in and Oli’s solo is indeed mesmerising. For this album it appears the guitars appear to have taken a back seat to the keys. In A Perfect Worldis a beautiful song, looking for that perfect work is something we’re all searching for, indeed marko sings the line life is a beautiful journey, overall it’s a very uplifting song and has some great guitar work from Oli and Jaska. Angel I found to have a very 80’s synth pop fell to it, but its been brought up to date by the guys and is very catchy.

On the whole I found the album a very easy listen, and yes it did make me think about the meanings, but as music is an outpour of emotions, its up the listener to decide what they think or feel. The album is released this Friday [October 5th] on Playground Music.  You can catch the band at the following dates, please note that the 02 Academy Islington is sold out.

Always loved music live, enjoy all genre's. Adding photography into the mix has been more recent and enjoying combing the two together. Self confessed vinyl junkie, so if not down the front, often found searching through record shops.
