Ben Poole and his band currently out on tour, stopped off at The Robin2 last night, an R & B club making an ideal venue for his soulful blend of blues.

Support tonight came from Birmingham blues band, Big Wolf Band, who played their set to an ever-expanding crowd.

The band is currently in the process of recording an album at Mad Hat Studios, which I gather is where Rebecca Downes recorded her recent albums. Their last single Stop Right Now a track recently re-mastered is available through the usual download sites.

Ben Poole and his band take to the stage at 9.30 and play a set that includes tracks from several of his albums, including a live recording by the BBC Live at the Albert Hall, something Ben is obviously proud of. Many of tonight’s songs are from his recent album Time has come.

He interacts with each member of the band during the set, at times bouncing off each other playfully, The best interaction of all came exchanging a few bars at a time with his keyboard player.

Ben recalls a time when he was 12 listening to the blues, or to be more specific an Eric Clapton album. I for one am glad he did as we were treated to his own version of the blues and superb take on one of Clapton’s tracks played with passion and vigor.

He also tells of his favorite track off the album, Longing For a Woman. By this time the audience were taken by his incredible musicianship climbing right into the track so we can feel his soul musically speaking.

Final track of the evening he dedicated to Gary Moore, some he has met and admired, in fact, Gary Moore said of Ben that he felt he was “a really great player”. During this track, he becomes absorbed by the music, playing in a similar style to that of Gary Moore, one that befits the legendary man himself, But what a way to end a set that was played with power, with passion and with soul.
