Friday night saw the up and coming Psych Rock foursome Weirds, play the Picture House social in Sheffield as part of their latest tour.
I turned up a bit early and spent some time backstage with the band, I was greeted with free beer!
Any band that offers you free beer and hospitality like these guys did are ok in my book. After chatting to the guys from the band for a while I realised what a great bunch of guys they all were, genuinely nice blokes with a great outlook on life and music!
10.30 rolled around and before we knew it, it was time for Weirds to take the stage. A swarm of fans look on ready for the band to start… lead singed Aidan humbly welcomes us all for attending then from nowhere… Unleashes hell, and one of the best shows I have seen! Ever!!!!
Are these the same nice 4 guys I was just chatting to I ask myself! Move over Sepulture these boys are the real deal. The set consisted of 8 well written and performed songs and contained a fair amount of crowd activity/participation. Singer Ade jumps into the crowd and struts round as the crowds eyes follow him belting out the bands heavy metal music.
The crowd are also trying to match the head banging antics of the Bassist Mathew and Guitarist Zach who seem alive with energy bouncing around the stage. After 8 tracks of electric thunderous energy the set draws to a close…. or so we think! The music dims to an ambient, slow level and drummer David brings his symbols and drums into the centre of the crowd closely followed by the rest of the band, he proceeds to down a can of lager in one and erupts into an orgy of heavy metal head banging! The crowd go wild as the band and crowd become one tangled in microphone wires.
The band then wrap up their set and walk back stage leaving the crowd wanting more. I head back stage with them and the band are still charged up but return to their previous persona of all round nice blokes. We take a few more photos, have a quick chat and I say good by.
Certain that this will not be the last time I see these guys. This is real rock n roll at its best!
Weirds are definitely one to watch! Believe me if you want to see a gig that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout this is the one for you. If you only see one band this year… make sure it these guys! I can’t wait for their debut album ‘Swarmculture’ to come out later this year, It promises to be a banger!
