A Look At The Specials Board…

Alright, I’ll admit it. I’m not a fan of the word, ‘iconic’. Overused by too many folk…

But I’m gonna have to use it at least once, because I’m gonna introduce to you a song called, Vote For Me. And who is behind it? The iconic 80’s ska kings, The Specials.

Yes indeed, Coventry’s finest are back and are in fine fettle. Terry Hall, Horace Panter and Lynval Golding, part of the very first line-up, are still in the band, which now includes Ocean Colour Scene guitarist, Steve Cradock and Libertines drummer, Gary Powell has also got involved as well, in place of the sadly departed, John Bradbury. But has that changed the sound of the band, and the new single? Not on your nelly.

The start hails back to Ghost Town, the keyboards giving you the goosebumps that song gave you back in 1981. Then the classic ska sound that only The Specials can produce kicks in, with the whispering vocals of Hall and co telling you of, “no rocks at Rockaway Beach, and all that glitters isn’t gold”. The political message is still there, dissecting the greed that has overcome this land. The familiar brass section and organ rhythms make this song as familiar and as welcome as the classics.

We are in an age where the get together of the original line ups of certain bands are begged for by the music fans. There will still be some people who hope that, one day, Jerry Dammers and Neville Staple will rejoin The Specials. But don’t think for a minute that they have lost their touch. Oh no, brilliance never leaves talented songwriters. And Vote For Me is right up there with the iconic 80’s masterpieces. I can’t wait for the new album and the tour next year, if this is anything to go by. Solid gold music by a rock steady band. Give a big welcome back to The Specials.

Vote For Me is available to download and stream now, and a new album, Encore, will follow next year.

An extensive European and UK tour will also commence next year in March, April and May. Check out the dates at The Specials website at the link below.
